Frequently Asked Questions

HERE'S A GLOSSARY OF QUICK ANSWERS TO YOUR MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do businesses in Tennessee need fire extinguisher tags?

Yes.  Tennessee fire code does indeed require businesses to have portable extinguishers inspected and properly tagged.  The tag proves the unit was inspected by a licensed fire protection technician with a specific identification number (unique to each licensed technician) and names the fire protection company who performed the work.

How often must extinguishers be inspected and serviced?

Upon installation fire extinguishers need to be tagged by a licensed fire & safety company.  After that, each fire extinguisher needs to be checked annually by a licensed fire & safety company as well.  A more thorough check and assessment is done at year six.  At year 12, fire extinguishers must be replaced by your fire safety company.  Tennessee enforces annual inspections and tags.

What is a red tag? What happens if an extinguisher gets red-tagged?

A red tag indicates that at the time of service, an extinguisher is deemed out of service and must be removed and replaced.  You cannot re-tag a red-tagged extinguisher until it is returned to compliance.  i.e. replaced by a licensed fire & safety company.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes, absolutely.  We are a fully licensed and insured fire safety and protection company.  Our business license number and technician certificate number are indicated on each fire tag we place.  Our owner has over 15+ years' experience in the FLS industry and is fully trained in all aspects of what we do at Icon Fire & Safety.  The technical aspect, professional training, and on-going certifications we require for our employees are extremely important to who we are and the service we provide.

What services do you provide besides tagging?

Our services include installation, repair, and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers, emergency exit and egress lighting, fire alarm systems, and other essential safety equipment such as first-aid kits and safety supplies.

We handle annual inspections, compliance tags, and certification to meet Tennessee state code requirements.  We also offer hands-on fire training & personalized fire safety plans to keep your business fire safe 365 days a year.

How long does an inspection take?

For most small businesses a single annual inspection + tagging usually takes a minimal amount of time. Something we can take care of before your business hours or during your lunch break. Larger facilities with multiple fire extinguishers or needing maintenance/replacements will take longer.   We will always work with your schedule to keep your business running & compliant.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for an inspection?

Prep work is minimal.  Our technicians will need to know where your extinguishers are located.  So please be prepared to show them the location of each one, keeping extinguishers accessible.  Additionally, there should be someone at the appointment able to make payments on the business' behalf via cash, check, or credit card.

What happens if my fire extinguisher fails inspection?

If an extinguisher fails inspection, no worries — we’ll never leave you without proper protection. Our technicians keep replacement extinguishers on hand, so we can swap out any that don’t pass right on the spot. We’ll make sure your new extinguisher is properly tagged, up to code, and ready to keep your business safe.

Do you provide documentation for audits or insurance?

Absolutely.  We provide service tags and inspection records that demonstrate compliance with the Tennessee Fire Code.

Do you offer any fire safety training for small businesses?

Yes. Upon request we will train your employees how to properly use a fire extinguisher, and how to follow your fire safety plan.  Need a fire safety plan too?  We provide personalized fire safety plans for businesses of all sizes, and offer on-site training for your team.  We also leave behind a simple P.A.S.S. instruction sign for quick, easy reference.
